Many artworks were created as a result of effort and pain. Does it always need to be hidden from the viewer? Is there really no beauty in suffering? What do you see when you look at a naked tightly bound female body? A person? An object? Does it depend on the context? What do you feel when you see a woman tying up another woman and making her suffer? What if it was a man? These are some of the questions that we invite you to explore when looking at our works.
Shibari is a Japanese rope bondage art. It involves tying up a person in intricate positions and patterns using jute or hemp rope, usually for an extended period of time.
We use shibari to create beauty but also to provoke and ask questions. To us, shibari is not only bondage. It is performance art because each of our sessions is an improvisation in which we reveal and witness ourselves in the most vulnerable ways. It is sculpture because it results in a three dimensional work of art using the human body as a material. It is fashion because it shapes the body and accentuates or modifies it. It is dance because it uses body movement as a form of self-expression. Rope is a simple tool and yet it gives endless possibilities to create.
